Our innovative range of money management and advice sessions has been profiled by a journalist in the London Evening Standard newspaper today (“Association does its tenants credit”, page 49, Monday 12th January).
The debt, welfare and benefit uptake guidance services that CBHA delivers in partnership with the East London Financial Inclusion Unit (ELFIU) are highlighted, as is our strong focus on resident involvement and local partnerships.
Martins Aimiuwu, Head of Revenue at CBHA, explains in the article why providing this support is so important to CBHA and its residents. “While some housing associations might signpost tenants to the Citizens’ Advice Bureau if they start to encounter financial difficulties – and we can, of course do that – we also believe it’s important to build financial capability,” he says.
“Our Financial Capability Workshops are designed to build upon residents’ knowledge of financial matters and help them choose suitable financial products like loans, saving, bank and credit union accounts.
“We help them to plan ahead, stay informed about financial matters; and manage their money more efficiently.”
The article examines how our positive promotion of the London Borough of Waltham Forest credit union highlights its benefits to residents. The credit union offers cost-effective access to credit and increased options to residents when it comes to making financial transactions.
CBHA’s employment and training initiatives are also profiled, including a job brokerage service offered to whole households and a project with local schools.
“We’re working with local schools to aid the delivery of financial and budgeting education in the classroom,” Martins is quoted as saying in the article. “Subject to space in the curriculum we hope to roll out this programme by the end of the year.”
