Extra time from football club

21 July 2011

Older residents at CBHA’s Doreen Capstan sheltered scheme are keeping fit and healthy with new activities brought to them by Leyton Orient Football Club.

Each week, the club provides an ‘Extra Time’ session for the residents and other people in the area aged 55 and over, funded by the Football Foundation and Comic Relief.

Doreen Capstan scheme manager Jill Brown said the residents chose what activities they would like to try once a week for six weeks before choosing the next activity.  So far they have done boccia (bowling while sitting down), movement to music and tai chi.
The current project ends in August but Leyton Orient is applying for funding to continue.

Two residents, Vera Digance and Ron Miller, recently attended a presentation at Fulham FC for all the local teams running Extra Time projects. The idea was to find out what other activities had worked in other areas. They enjoyed a meal before their own views were sought and they tried out activities and games.
