An exciting course created by CBHA and young people for teenage girls has been given official accreditation. Mirror Image, which works on building girls’ self-esteem, will now lead to an award or certificate in Personal and Social Development (equivalent to a GCSE) for those taking part. CBHA staff and community volunteers have trained as assessors for the course.

Head of Community Development Roz Gordon said: “We devised our course modules and submitted them to ASDAN.  The Mirror Image modules were matched to ASDAN’s Personal and Social Development modules Once it was approved, they gave it accreditation. The girls’ award (level 2 = GCSE Grade B) or certificate (level 1 = GCSE Grade E/F) will show they have completed, studied and understood the course. This will show their achievement and be great for their self-esteem. Of course, it will be particularly good for those girls who do not have any other qualifications.”

The first Mirror Image course started at the end of 2009 and proved very popular. Youth leader Judy Griffiths said: “It includes girls who align themselves with gang members or who are at risk of getting involved with crime. In addition, when female youth offenders are sentenced, attending Mirror Image could be a community service option.”

The course looks at choosing the right friends, love and healthy loving relationships, dealing with rejection and betrayal and family issues. Judy added: “We also see what the girls want to include and discuss. Some wanted to use poetry to talk about their feelings and we will investigate if we can get any of that published.”
Teenage girls who would like to join Mirror Image can go on Fridays from 7pm at Leyton Youth Club (Leyton Cricket Grounds), Crawley Road, Leyton E10.
