CBHA residents with pre-pay electricity meters are being warned to avoid a scam in which criminals offer them fake top-ups.
Energy UK says power companies can identify those homes using electricity but not paying for it so anyone letting the fraudsters in will end up paying twice – once to the criminal and once to the energy provider.
Michala Jervis, head of tenancy support said: “The scam is of particular concern because, to obtain the fake top-ups, people must let the criminals into their homes to access their electricity meters.
There is only one safe and secure way to buy credit for pre-pay electricity meters – from official outlets such as the Post Office, PayPoint or Payzone.”
If you know anyone illegally selling electricity meter top-ups, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Any customer worried they may have been affected should call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06, or their energy supplier to seek advice.
