Opportunities
Supporting local people into sustainable employment has become a priority for CBHA over the past decade.
The unemployment picture in Waltham Forest is not significantly dissimilar to other areas of London. Characteristics include 6,000 lone parents on income support, 10,000 residents on incapacity benefits, 5,000 residents on job seekers allowance.
The combination of low or no skills, worklessness and long term attachment to welfare benefits adds to a range of barriers that prevent significant numbers of the most disadvantaged in the borough accessing and retaining employment opportunities.
The borough is characterised by a small economy with relatively few businesses, the overwhelming majority being quite small.
Existing plans for East London offer a significant opportunity for the area to continue to grow. Some of the planned developments include:
• London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics Games
• Growth in the Thames Gateway, particularly the Royal Docks area
• The Stratford City development
• Continued growth in the Isle of Dogs – Canary Wharf
